privacy.
Reading without an account
- No analytics, no ads, no tracking cookies.
- Your light or dark theme choice is kept in your own browser (local storage). It never leaves your device.
- The site is hosted by Vercel, which keeps short-lived request logs (such as your IP address and browser) to run and protect the service.
- If you close the sign-up invitation at the end of an article, or have been signed in on this browser, your browser remembers it (local storage) so the invitation doesn't come back.
- Videos are embedded from youtube-nocookie.com and only load when you press play. Their preview images do come from YouTube's servers, so Google sees that request.
If you make an account
Accounts are optional. You can sign in with Google or with your email address.
Private (only you, and Gvan as the site's owner, through the database):
- Your email address. It's used to sign you in and is never shown on the site.
- How you sign in (email, Google or both), and when you joined and last signed in.
- When you last changed your username (it can change once every 30 days).
- If you sign up with Google: Google shares your name, email address and profile picture. Your first name becomes your starting display name, and a copy of your Google picture becomes your profile picture. Both can be changed or removed in your settings.
Public (anyone can see it, for example next to comments): your display name, your username, your profile picture if you add one, and when you joined. New accounts get a random username (like reader_482913) that you can change. Pictures are cropped to a square and stored without their location or other details. The comments you write are public too, with your display name, username and picture, and when you wrote and last edited them.
To keep you signed in, the site sets sign-in cookies in your browser. They're used for nothing else.
Comments
- Only signed-in readers can comment; everyone can read comments.
- You can edit or delete your own comments any time.
- Gvan can delete any comment.
- Deleting a comment that has replies leaves “This comment was deleted.” in its place, with its text and your name removed, so the replies still make sense.
Where it's stored
- Supabase: the database, sign-in and uploaded files, in Tokyo, Japan.
- Vercel: hosts the site.
- Resend: sends the sign-in emails.
- Google: only if you choose to sign in with Google.
Nothing is sold or shared with anyone else, and there are no ads.
The database is backed up now and then. Backups are kept for up to 30 days and then deleted, so a deleted profile can live on in a backup for at most that long. Backups hold profiles (names and usernames) and comments, not email addresses.
Removing your account
Go to Settings → Account → Delete account. It deletes your sign-in, your email address, your profile and your picture straight away. Your comments stay as “deleted user”, without your name, username or picture (see Comments above), so delete any you'd like gone first. (Copies of a picture kept by the image servers' caches run out within a few hours; the same goes for a picture you remove or replace.) You can also email starfoxlabs.contact@gmail.com from the address you signed up with, and it will be done for you.
If you signed in with Google, you can also remove Starfox Labs from your Google account's list of third-party connections.
